HISTORY The Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors, together with the Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and the Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań, is one of the most important international music competitions in Poland. The competition takes place in Katowice - the capital of Silesia, an industrial region of Poland. Grzegorz Fitelberg was regarded as one of the most outstanding Polish conductors. The International Competition for Conductors was initiated and created by a great Polish conductor Karol Stryja (1915-1998) who was Grzegorz Fitelberg's last student and the director of the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra throughout many years. Since then the competition, consisting of either three or four stages, has been repeated every four years. During all the previous competitions the participants of the first stage conducted the Symphony Orchestra of the Academy of Music in Katowice. From the second stage on,they conducted the Symphony Orchestra of the Silesian Philharmonic. Beginning from the year 2003 year, the participants will conduct only the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra. The repertoire (overtures, symphonies, symphonic poems, violin concertos) includes classical, romantic and contemporary works of both foreign and Polish composers.
