Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition ( Los Angeles, California, 2005) 1. GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1 The Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition will be held in Los Angeles, California, from June 4 to June 18, 2005. 1.2 The Competition is open to pianists of any nationality born on or after June 4,1977 and before June 4,1987. 1.3 The postmark deadline for applications is March 1, 2005. Use the official application form if available. The form may be duplicated. When forwarding applications, applicants are advised to make sure their entry is sent by AIR MAIL as those sent by regular mail may take as long as two months to arrive. Applicants should contact the nearest American Embassy or Consulate for advice. 1.5 Competitors accepted to the Competition will be provided with roundtrip air tickets or up to $1,000.00 US for their travel expenses upon submission of a copy of the ticket. 1.6 Upon arrival, competitors will be provided with competition-related transportation, food, practice facilities, and lodging in private homes by interested members of the community between June 1 and June 19, 2005. Competitors who are not participating in the Semifinal or Final Stages are not required to stay until the end of the Competition, although they are welcome to do so. Accommodation is offered only to competitors accepted for the Competition and their spouses. Competitors must arrive in Los Angeles no later than June 2, 2005. 1.7 Competitors must not have any other professional commitments during the time of the Competition. 1.8 All information contained in this book is correct at the time of publication. However, the Competition executive committee reserves the rights to make changes if circumstances so dictate. In any difference between translations of texts and rules, the English language text is definitive. 2. RULES FOR APPLICATION top of the page 2.1 The following documents are to be submitted along with the application form: a) Certified copy of the birth certificate (Xerox or photo). b) Current one page biography or resume. c) Recommendation letters from two prominent music figures. d) Two recent color glossy photos suitable for publication, no smaller than 5 by 7 inches or 12 by 17 centimeters. e) Completed application form with the list of repertoire to be performed during each Stage of the Competition. f) VHS video cassette tape (PAL, SECAM, or NTSC format) containing three works representing three different styles of music and not exceeding 40 minutes, and not containing any works from of the competitors competition program. g) A non-refundable check or international money order of $100.00 US Dollars payable to Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition. h) Two full recital programs ready for performance in the 2005-2006 concert season. 2.2 A five-member jury including the Competition Executive Director and Competition Co-Chairmen will choose approximately 30 competitors to participate in the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition. Each applicant will be notified of his or her acceptance or non-acceptance as a competitor by April 1, 2005. Incomplete applications will not be considered. 2.3 Applicants should retain copies of all material sent with their applications. The competition organizing committee will accept no responsibility for any lost documents. 2.4 All applications will be reviewed by the Competition Artistic Committee and treated as confidential. The Committee reserves the right to request additional information about an applicant. 2.5 a) If an applicant studies with a member of the Jury of the Competition between June 2002, and June 2005, the application will not be accepted, the documents will be returned, and the enrollment fee refunded. b) The applicant must state clearly on the application form the names of the teachers with whom the applicant is having or has had any teaching relationship, either public or private, from June, 2002, to the application date. 2.6 The last day for repertoire changes for the Competition is April 30, 2005. 3. COMPETITION ORDER top of the page 3.1 The Competition will consist of three separate rounds: First Stage, Second Stage, and Final Stage. 3.2 Not more than thirty (30) pianists will be selected to participate in the competition. Not more than twelve (12) contestants will be admitted to the second stage. Not more than six (6) pianists will be admitted to the final stage. The final placing and awards will be decided at the concluding meeting of the Jury Panel. 3.3 The order of appearance of pianists in the First Stage will be determined by a drawing. The competition will follow this order except at the discretion of the Co-Chairmen of the Jury,or for unusual and extenuating circumstances, or for programmatic considerations in the Final Stage where contestants perform with orchestra. 3.4 Each contestant will be allotted time to practice their recital programs on stage. 3.5 Pianists may not contact or speak with any member of the Jury as long as they continue to participate in the Competition. Any violation of this rule may disqualify the pianist. 3.6 All stages of the Competition are open, and tickets will be sold to the general public. 3.7 A contestant may not repeat the performance of any work during the competition (including the preliminary round). The performing order of repertoire for each program is selected by the contestant. Contestants will not be interrupted or stopped during their programs and recitals unless the stated time limit is exceeded. 3.8 Prize winners of the 2002 Rachmaninoff competition are not eligible to apply. 4. JURY RULES top of the page 4.1 The Jury will perform its functions under the supervision of the Jury Co-Chairmen in consultation with the Executive Director of the Competition, and will be governed throughout by written judging procedures. 4.2 Participation in the work of the Jury presupposes the acceptance of the Competition rules. 4.3 Contestants will be evaluated in accordance with the following criteria. The Jury will select the contestants to be admitted respectively to the Second and Third Round by simple majority vote of the Jury members present. In the Final Round, winners will be determined by a two-thirds majority vote. At the end of the Competition a combination of the jury's voting throughout each round will be made public. 4.4 The Co-Secretaries of the Competition will record all decisions of the Jury in writing. 4.5 The Jury members shall abstain from giving interviews or making their opinions public during the entire time of the competition. 5. PRIZES AND AWARDS top of the page 5.1 The Competition Executive Committee for the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition will announce Six Prizes: GRAND PRIZE • Rachmaninoff Grand Prize $30,000 • Rachmaninoff Competition Gold Medal and title of Laureate • Debut recital at Carnegie Hall • Debut recital at the Great Hall of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory • Concert engagements • Compact disc recording SECOND PRIZE • Cash Award $20,000 and title of Laureate • Rachmaninoff Competition Silver Medal • New York recital • Moscow recital • Concert engagements • Compact disc recording THIRD PRIZE • Cash Award $15,000 and title of Laureate • Rachmaninoff Competition Bronze Medal • New York recital • Moscow recital • Concert engagements • Compact disc recording FINALISTS (Non-medalists) • Cash Award $10,000 each and title of Laureate • Compact disc recording • Concert engagements OTHER PRIZES / Audience Prize. Sponsored by Old Town Music • Winner selected by audience vote, $3,000 SEMIFINALISTS • Cash Award $2,000 5.2 Taxes will be deducted from prizes according to US tax laws in effect at the time of the Competition. 5.3 Depending on the outcome of the Competition and acting within the limit of the number of prizes, the Jury has the right to: a) refrain from awarding prizes b) divide prizes between performers c) disqualify any contestant from the competition on the ground of a unanimous jury vote. The decision of the Jury is not subject to any review 5.4 All the prizewinners are bound to participate, without any further compensation, in the Competition Final Concert and Reception. An unjustified absence in the prizewinners' concert or reception entails resignation from the cash prize. 5.5 The program of the Competition Final Concert will be decided by the Competition Jury in agreement with the performers. 5.6 The First, Second and Third Prize Winners will, if requested, perform in two recitals without compensation to benefit the Third Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition, to be held in 2008. 5.7 Contestants receiving prizes are required to be present at the awards ceremony. 6. OTHER MATTERS top of the page 6.1 The Organizing Committee reserves the exclusive world-wide rights to broadcast (including the Internet) and televise all stages of the Competition and Competition closing concert, to record audio and video materials, and to distribute them without any additional fee payable to competition contestants. The Organizing Committee reserves the exclusive right to arrange agreements with other parties with regard to the realization of the above-mentioned competition materials. 6.2 Audio and Video presentations, recordings and photographs taken at any Competition activity or at the direction of the Competition Executive Committee become the property of the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition and are subject to exclusive use and licensing by it, including but not limited to radio and television broadcasting. |
