COMPETITION RULES GENERAL PROVISIONS Dates The International Rudolf Firkusny Piano Competition will be held from 24 June until 30 June 2005 at the Jan Deyl Conservatory, Maltezske nam. 14, Praha 1, and at the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts, Malostranske nam. 13, Praha 1. Conditions of entry The competition is open to young pianists of all nationalities who were born after 1 January 1979. The application form must be filled out infull and sent to the organizer at the above address. Registration deadline - 30/11/2004 Last date for entry: 30 November 2004, postmark as proof of timely application. The Competition reserves the right to exclude candidates who do not meet the required standards and also laureates of Firkusny Competition 2003. The candidates will be notified by 15 January 2005, at the latest, whether their application has been accepted. Entry fee An entry fee of Euro 100 must be sent by 15 March 2005 to: Firkusny Competition Ceska sporitelna, 250 01 Brandys nad Labem Account number - 427494329/0800 Swift code - GIBACZPX Any bank charges to be borne by the candidate. This entry fee is not refundable. Accommodation Accomodation expenses in Prague during the competition from Friday 24 June until Friday 1 July (seven nights) will be covered by the organizer. Located in the center of historic Prague, just a two minute walk, the competition is held at the Jan Deyl Conservatory. The 17th Century building features a baroque recital hall, recently renovated accommodation, and ample practice facilities. SCHEDULE Friday, June 24 Registration, drawing of lots Saturday, Sunday, June 25, 26 round 1 Monday, Tuesday, June 27, 28 round 2 Wednesday, June 29 round 3 Thursday, June 30 Concert of the Prize-winners, the prize-giving Ceremony, Dvorak Hall - Rudolfinum JURY The jury of the Competition comprises outstanding artists and pedagogues from the Czech Republic and abroad. The Chairman of the jury is Prof. Peter Toperczer, piano virtuoso, at present Rector of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. The final composition of the jury will be announced prior to the commencement of the Competition. PRIZES 1st prize, Laureate of the Competition, 75,000 CZK 2nd prize, Laureate of the Competition, 50,000 CZK 3rd prize, Laureate of the Competition, 25,000 CZK The financial awards above are subject to tax and/or other possible deductions in accordance with laws and regulations valid in the Czech Republic. If the competition performances of the candidates fail to attain the required standard, the jury will be free not to award all the prizes or not to award any prizes. If the standard of competition performances of several candidates appears to be equal, the jury will be at liberty to award several prizes of the respective grade. In such event the respective financial awards will be added together and then divided equally among the recipients of prizes of the same grade. The jury will see to it that the amount of such awards is not at odds with the final order of precedence in the results of the competition and that they are not higher for single prizes than as stated above. Only one 1st prize can be awarded. Additional prizes The University of Florida School of Music Prize - solo recitals in USA for one of Laureates. The expenses for airfare will be covered by a financial award. The Czech Radio Prize The Lord Mayor City of Prague Prize The Academy of Music Prague Prize The Charles University Prize The Bohuslav Martinu Foundation Prize The Smetana Music Society Prize The OSA Foundation Prize Additional prizes are being negotiated and will be published in the competition catalogue. REGULATIONS 1. The competition has three rounds and the number of the candidates is limited. A maximum of 20 candidates may qualify for the 2nd round, a maximum of 9 candidates may qualify for the 3rd round. 2. The points in the 1st round only served for advancement to the 2nd round. 3. The points from the 2nd and 3rd round will be add up. 4. The points awarded by members of the jury will be posted after the end of each round. This will be apply to the candidates who do not qualify to the following rounds. The points of all candidates will be posted after the Competition. 5. The decision of the jury is final. 6. Each round is open to the public. Playing without scores is obligatory. The order of compositions in the 1st and 2nd round depends on the candidate. 7. Candidates may decide whether or not to play the repetitions, but must remain within the specified durations. 8. The competition repertoire given on the enty form may be modified until the 15th of April 2005. The change must be confirmed by the organizer. 9. Candidates must indicate on the entry form the duration of each choosen piece. 10. The order of appearance of candidates is determined by drawing lots, and applies to all rounds of the Competition. REQUIRED REPERTOIRE 1st round 1. Prelude and Fuga from Well Tempered Piano I or II by J. S. Bach. 2. One Concert Etude by F. Chopin. 3. One etude by one of the following composers: B. Bartok, C. Debussy, G. Ligeti, S. Prokofjev, A. Scriabin or E. Rautavaara. 4. Polka - polkas / etuda - etudes, own choice by B. Smetana or B. Martinu (Etudes and Polkas). 1st round duration limit: 15 - 20 minutes. 2nd round 1. One fast movement from the classical sonata in the sonata or rondo form by one of the following composers: J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart, L. van Beethoven, J. L. Dusik (Dussek), J. H. Vorisek. 2. One waltz, own choice by one of the following composers: J. Brahms, P. I. Cajkovskij, A. Dvorak, F. Chopin or F. Schubert. 3. Composition / compositions by one of the following composers (20th Century): B. Bartok, C. Debussy, B. Martinu, S. Prokofjev, M. Ravel, I. Stravinskij, L. Janacek, V. Novak, J. Suk. 4. One contemporary piece, composed in the second half of the 20th Century, a free choice piece from the participant's home country. 2nd round duration limit: 25 - 35 minutes. 3rd round 1. One piece from the Czech Dances, 2nd Series by B. Smetana. 2. A Sonata or significant work of Romanticism, own choice. 3rd round recommendation duration limit: 25 - 35 minutes.
