It was made of stiff card, like the ones received by the other 8,251 guests, but was uniquely decorated with marching soldiers, a lion and a unicorn: a reminder that, as monarch and head of the Commonwealth the Queen may have become the symbolic leader of a quarter of the world’s population, but she was also the mother of two small children, Charles, then four, and Anne, two. (Anne was deemed too young to attend the ceremony, and Charles was only present for the Anointing – when the monarch is consecrated – before being escorted home again by his nanny.)
