On July 20, 2022, The Guardian reported that "Ranil Wickremesinghe", Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. He was elected as the new president to replace the ousted ex-president Kotabaya Rajapaksa, after weeks of chaos among protesters calling for him to resign. Ranil, who was prime minister for six times but never held the presidency. It won an overwhelming victory in parliament on Wednesday local time. After opening for members of the House of Representatives to vote on the new president in secret ballot. The vote came after protesters ousted the former president of Kota Baya. Amid anger over the escalating economic crisis Ranil faces a difficult road as Sri Lanka experiences its worst economic monsoon since independence. People have a shortage of food and fuel. The parliament is faced with a crisis of confidence. After being elected president Ranil calls on all political parties to work together for the benefit of the country. Ranil, 73, is backed by Sri Lanka's ruling party Poduchana Peramuna (SLPP), which holds the most seats in parliament. and was seen as a candidate supported by the Rajapaksa family. which, although not in power, still influenced the party they formed. |
