TransforMusic Competition for Composers 2004 07 Dec 2004

In the 20th century there appeared a huge gap between schools and genres of serious and light music. To build a bridge above this we announce an international composers’ competition the conditions of which are as follows.

The composition has to be based on a recognisable part (e.g. rhythmical or melodic element, probably some other kind of musical parameter) of a (preferably well-known) light music piece written between the 1960s and 90s. The composition should use the artistic means of serious music creating an original new work from the basic material.

The composition

1. may be written for an optional kind of instrumental ensemble (from solo to symphony orchestra) but may not contain vocal parts;
2. its duration must neither be less than 10 nor over 20 minutes;
3. is not allowed to be an already performed or published work.

The composer

1. has no limit of age;
2. may submit only one composition to the competition;
3. is obliged to use a slogan on the score which is to be submitted in 5 (five) copies to the address of the competition. The name and address (preferably e-mail and/or phone number) as well as a curriculum vitae and a photo of the composer should be enclosed in one copy in an envelop holding the slogan on the top. The composer agrees to prepare the parts of his/her prize-winning work to the organisers for a deadline to be given later.

Deadline for entering the score to the organisers is 15 October 2004.
The jury consisting of famous personalities of both serious and light music will make their decision by 30 November 2004.
The winning compositions will be performed at a prize-giving ceremonial concert the recording of which will be published soon after on CD.

The compositions should be submitted to the following address: TransforMusic Ltd.
1406 Budapest pf. 92.
Hungary
The organisers do not save the scores which get no prize.

The total amount of prizes is 1.500.000 Hungarian Forints (approximately 6000 Euros). The number and value of the prizes is to be decided by the jury.

TransforMusic International Competition for Composers to the Memory of John Lennon

On the 9th of October 2005 we shall celebrate John Lennon’s 65th birthday and on the 10th of December we shall remember the date when he was murdered 25 years ago in New York. To his memory we announce an International Competition for Composers with the following conditions.

The composition should be based on some recognisable element (tune, rhythm or any other parameter) of a song the composer or a co-author of which is Lennon, and which element should be modified by the composer according to the means of classical (serious) music.

The composition:

1. The performers of the composition are optional which may spread from solo instruments to symphony orchestra but may not contain vocal parts.
2. Duration: from 10 to 20 minutes.
3. Compositions that have already been brought to the public (performed or published) may not take part in the competition.

In the score there has to be mentioned the title of the original work.

The composer

1. has no limit of age;
2. may submit only one composition to the competition;
3. is obliged to use a slogan on the score which is to be submitted in 5 (five) copies to the address of the competition.

If the allusions to a Lennon song are fragmentary only and so can be regarded as quotations only, there is no need to ask for the permission of the original rightholder. Should the compositions include a longer uninterrupted musicial part from the original work, it is the competitor's task and obligation to procure the necessary licences. In this latter case the licences are to be attached to the composition.

Deadline for entering the score to the organizers: 30th June 2005.

The international board of the jury – members of which are well-known representatives of contemporary classical music, shall bring it's final decision by the 15th August 2005.
The awarded compositions shall be played at a prize-giving ceremonial concert in December 2005.

At the same time we shall proclaim an International Invitation to the public in order to call people to play the awarded compositions as well as ones which are suggested for performance in connection with the above anniversary in the whole world.

The Commitee of the Competition shall release the recordings of the concert on CD.

The address where the compositions are to be sent:

Melissa 2001 Ltd - Transformusic
1406 Budapest pf. 92.
Hungary

The maximum total of the awards is: HUF 1,500,000.- /cca. EURO 6,000.-/

It is the Jury's task to bring a decision about the number and value of the awards.
