Competition Rules

The Competition is open to pianists of all nationalities born after 29 May 1973.
Deadline for sending the applications is the 18 February 2005 (the post stamp date is decisive). Applications are received by: International Johann Nepomuk Hummel Piano Competition, Markéta Štefková, PhD., Svätoplukova 18, 821 08 Bratislava, Slovak Republic.
The following documents are to be enclosed with the application form:
two recent photographs 9x13 or 10x15 cm suitable for reproduction,
the copy about payment of the enrollment fee 50 ? to the bank account of:

Otherwise the application will be neglected.
The candidate’s identity and age will be verified before the opening of the competition.
On 28 May 2005 lots will be drawn to set the order of the contestants. In the case of a participant’s absence, a member of the Competition Secretary will draw the lot instead of him/her.
The competition will be organized in three rounds: max. 15 candidates passed from round one to round two and max. 6 candidates passed from round two to round three.
The repertory on the application form is obligatory
The entire programme (except the Hummnel Trio) should be played by memory. In case of high number of participants the jury is entitled to reduce the programme of the 1st stage.
The following main prizes will be awarded to winners of the 5th International Johann Nepomuk Hummel Piano Competition (in Slovak Cro­wns): 1st prize – SKK 120 000 (and three concerts in Slovakia), 2nd prize – SKK 80 000, 3rd prize – SKK 60 000. The winners of the main prizes get at the same time entitled the Competition Laureats. Besides that, some other special prizes announced before the beginning of the competition may be awarded.
The jury: Ida Černecká (SK), Sándor Falvai (HU), Sijavuch Gadjiev (IT), Pawel Kowalski (PL), Marián Lapšanský (SK), Peter Toperczer (CZ), Jan Wijn (NL).
The results of the competition will be announced publicly following the Competition finals on 5th June 2005 with the festive awarding of the prizes. The decision of the Jury is final.
The jury is entitled not to award certain prizes, to join or divide them, with the exemption of the 1st prize, which cannot be shared.
The competitor agrees that his/her performance may be recorded by Radio and TV companies. The shots can be used to pro­mote the Competition or its laureates at noncommercial base.
Competition performances are not anonymous and they are accessible to public.
If requested, accommodation will be managed by the Secretariat of the Competition.

Stage I

one sonata by Joseph Haydn or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
one work of Fryderyk Chopin chosen from the following: Impromptu, Op. 29; Impromptu, Op. 36; Impromptu, Op. 51; Fantaisie-Impromptu, Op. 66
one etude from Etudes d’execution transcendante eventually from Grandes etudes de Paganini by Franz Liszt
one etude by Johann Nepomuk Hummel

Stage II
Recital consisting works from at least two different style periods + one composition of Slovak Composer written for the 5th Internatio­nal Johann Nepomuk Hummel International Piano Competition (the compulsory piece „Musicburger“ for the participants of 2nd round of the competition was composed by Slovak composer Eugeny Irshai. The score will be sent to the applicants together with the letter of acceptance after receiving of their application form and paying of the enrollment fee). Duration of Stage II: min. 50, max. 60 minutes

Stage III

one trio by Johann Nepomuk Hummel chosen from the following Trio E flat major, Op. 12; G major, Op. 35; G major, Op. 65.
one of the following concerts: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – C major, KV 467; A major, KV488, B flat major, KV 595; Ludwig van Beethoven – No. 2, 3, 4; Johann Nepomuk Hummel: A minor, Op. 85; Fryderyk Chopin – E minor, Op. 11, F minor, Op. 21.
