International Gaudeamus Music Week 2005
- composers' competition for the young generation -
Amsterdam, September 5-11, 2005

Rules & Regulations

Composers who are born after September 11, 1974 may enter works.

Works may already have been performed, but they must have been composed not more than three years ago.
An international committee will select the works which will compete for the Gaudeamus Prize. After the performance of the selected compositions during the Music Week 2005, an international jury - consisting of Alvin Curran (United States, 1938), Hans Koolmees (Netherlands, 1959), Isao Matsushita (Japan, 1951) - will award this prize. This Gaudeamus Prize consists of ? 4.550,- as a commission for a new composition which will be premiered during the International Gaudeamus Music Week the following year, 2006.

Compositions can be entered into the following categories with a maximum of 2 works per category and 4 works in total.


A. ORCHESTRA:
Orchestra compositions with a maximum of instruments: 3 fl. (1pic.), 3 ob. (1eh.), 3cl. (1 bass-cl.), 3 bsn., 4 hrn., 2 trp., 3 trb., 1 tb., 1 timp., 2 perc., 1 hp., 10 1st vl., 8 2nd vl., 6 vla., 6 vc., 4 db.


B. CHAMBER MUSIC
In principle everything is possible in this category, within the limits of solo instruments to ensembles consisting of maximally 16 instruments; with or without electronics, video, etc.; written for specific performers or for any musician/ensemble. Also choir compositions with a maximum of voices: 2 sopr., 2 mezzo., 2 alt., 2 ten., 2 bas


C. ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Electronic music meaning tape compositions, music for instruments and electronics, music for live controlled electronic music or installations.


D. IMPROVISATION


Entries should be accompanied by a text about the method of improvisation and tape or cd with sound examples.
The entry fee is ? 25,- (Euro) for each work and should be paid by credit card, international postal money order/mandat de poste international (no bank cheques) or transferred Gaudeamus Foundation, Postbank account No. 381200, IBAN code NL83PSTB0000381200, BIC code PSTBNL21or to the ABN/AMRO Bank in Bilthoven, No. 552420220, IBAN code NL86ABNA0552420220, BIC code ABNANL2A of the Gaudeamus Foundation, with reference to 'Music Week 2005' before February 1st 2005. Only the title, the year of composition and the duration of the works may be included in the scores. The composer's name may not appear in/on the score so that the selection committee can judge the score anonymously.

The composer's name, his/her correspondence address, and the title of the work must be written on an envelope enclosed with the score and containing:
- the completed entry form
- a biography of the composer (in English or Dutch preferably send by email as well)
- a commentary on the work for the program book (in English or Dutch preferably send by email as well)

Composers who don't want to compete for the Gaudeamus Prize should mention this expressly in a separate letter.

The composer must provide the performance material if the work is selected by one of the selection committee. The performance may not result in charges, such as rental fees, for the Gaudeamus Foundation, the performers, the radio, or cd-producer.

Deadline: January 31, 2005 (postmark 31/1/05, to be received by 9/2/05)

During the International Gaudeamus Music Week composers whose works have been selected will be hosted by the Gaudeamus Foundation. Accommodation and a daily food-allowance will be provided.

The entered works will be kept in the library of the Gaudeamus Foundation. They will be returned only if this is expressly requested and the composer has paid his entry fee.

All works received within the deadline on our address below, will be judged by the selection committee.
By entering his/her work(s), the participant indicates his/her acceptance of these conditions and the decisions of the selection committee. Works by composers who do not submit to the requirements above will be disqualified.
