But it was raining when we passed through Gudhjem, arguably Bornholm’s prettiest village. The rain now having abated, we eat ours sitting outside on picnic benches looking out to the tiny island of ChristiansГё. This was the kind of low-key pleasure in which, we discovered, Bornholm specialises. The island seems able to conjure an abundance of those blissful moments when you forget about the modern world, the raging tide of technology, commercialism and social media — it helped that both our phones had by now lost their signals.
