This revealed the direction of water flow, specifically, that the water that once coursed through the channels was spreading out rather than converging. The team also found that the slope of the sedimentary beds in the channels increases suddenly near the downstream ends of the channels. Taken together, these lines of evidence indicate that the inverted channels originated as part of a delta, where a river would flow into a larger body of water, such as an ocean, and deposit sediment along the way. |
